Good Grief....
Apr. 13th, 2001 08:33 amI just looked and I haven't posted since monday...sheesh. I know I have been busy at work but wow.
Let me see. I have basically worked my butt off this week. It was a long, depressing one. One of my patients (10 y.o. black female)didn't make it the next day. *sigh*
She was found at the base of the stairs with seizure-like activity by EMS. Family didn't know if she seized, then fell down the stairs and hit her head OR fell down the stairs, hit her head then seized. It was weird. The whole time I was with this patient, it seemed like just another seizure patient. But then little things started cropping up.....left sided activity without right sided activity but still unconscious etc...
Weird to be post-dictal ("after seizure") like that. THEN we went to "cat scan" and as she was scanned we all looked at the monitor and gasped. A golf ball sized bleed mid-brain.....ugh ugh ugh. Very bad news.
We rushed back to the trauma room. Intubated her and paged neurosurgery stat. They came eval'ed her and reported a ICP (inter-cranial pressure) monitor needed to be placed.
In other words, we're gonna drill into her head. In the ER! This shit is only supposed to be done in the OR! (wringing of hands commence) STRESS STRESS STRESS
Okay if I wanted to be an OR tech/nurse I'd trained for that! shit shit shit...
In a nutshell, it was the yuckiest purposeful thing I had seen in person....
And her ICP was way, way, way too high.....
The next day, (today) I got word that she had been declared brain dead. *sigh* Weirdest week of my life.
I won't even go into the child-abuse case I was involved with the same night......can you say "mother........must.........die.........."?
Or "Can we do the same things to her as she did here?" That patient may not make it as well.....*sigh*
I cannot express the mental state I am in......
All I can say ....Thankyou Lord for my parents....and thankyou Lord for the next 4 days off...

Decompression time.
Date: 2001-04-13 07:12 am (UTC)If you need some downtime, maybe we call all hang out at the condo and send out for pizza. Farscape is on, and most of us in the neighborhood are riveted to the set when it's playing, anyhow, so we may as well all watch as a group.
And no, there are no yucky medical procedures on the show this week. They have thankfully moved away from that. Even I was getting squicked, and I have a high squick threshold.

Date: 2001-04-14 08:17 am (UTC)Farscape (http://www.scifi.com/farscape/).
It's a science fiction show on the Sci Fi Channel that's very, very good. Last night, Dave (http://www.livejournal.com/~redbeardave), Matt (http://www.livejournal.com/~mattycub), and (for a little while), Lee (http://www.livejournal.com/~westtxcub) all came over to watch the show. We usually send out for pizza or somesuch. We did much the same thing (with a larger group) after the bear contest at TBRU.
