Yesterday morning I got a patient by EMS.

EMS didn't realize the mortal condition of the patient.

EMS sauntered in with the patient wrapped in a blanket.

I uncovered the patient to access the patient's status.

I scooped and ran to the critical care room with the child in my arms.

The patient died in my care within 15 minutes of arrival.

I am still trying to work this out in my head.

At least I have it down in print now....

Oh how awful! Pediatric care is very difficult emotionally. There is much to endure, though in the end it can be very rewarding. You are a remarkable man to be able to do such work. My suggestion, don't work it out in your head alone. This was a traumatic event and left unexpressed it can fester. Talk with your friends and family too. It helps, and with each retelling it helps you gain some more perspective. *HUG*

This was my first step.

I will work it out, step by step.

For how long have you been doing this kind of work?

Was EMS not trained to the level to recognize the problem or were they just stupid?

If their inate stupidity is causing people to die, they should be fired or at least suspended until they will handle the job the way it needs to be.

Sorry to hear....

Clint i am very sorry to hear what you have gone thru. Must be traumatizing..i have had clients suicide on me through lack of communication and other idiotic reasons. Big hugs to you. If it helps, your reflection about all of this points at a very big heart you have and I think your team is rather lucky to have you. Courage fella.

I can't say I've ever been put in the exact same position as you Clint. I have had more than a few children die in my care as a result of the gradual deterioration of their cardiac function as they waited for transplant...but these are expected deaths not deaths brought about by the possible ineptitude of other professionals. Do get some counsel from your peers, your in-house Trauma team or your employee assistance program. I have almost quit what I do several times if not for the help of these resourceful people.

Never let the "dumb as paint" people out there dampen your resolve to be the best health professional you can be AND</> be able to come home at the end of the day feeling good about it!

Big hugs
Charles
