ACK! Not a Compaq.

Every one that my friends have had, has had some sort of problem of one kind or another. Hope you fair better. But now that Compaq has merged with HP, maybe their quality controls have gotten better.

*hugs my HP Kayak* :)

feh!

HP desktops are even less attractive than Compaq desktops used to be.

Compaq desktops used to be full of "proprietary" crap where you could only get drivers from Compaq, but that's not so true anymore. I'm using a Compaq laptop right now and it's ok (and laptops are often prone to more problems than desktops).

i still think an imac or emac would have been a smarter purchase, tho.

The last Compaq laptop I saw, had problems starting up. So my friend put in the "recovery CD", which wiped the hard drive and failed to copy the OS back to it. He tried to install a copy of Windows onto it, but alot of the hardware failed to detect and it ended up running in MS-DOS compatiblity mode.

I could care less how the outside of the computer looks, as long as it does what it's supposed to on the inside. My HP is running 2 versions of Windows and a version of Linux, none of the hardware has failed to detect during setup and it runs with no problems. That is more important to me than some pretty plastic color pieces.

i'm talking about less attractive from an operations standpoint--i don't really care about the aesthetic value of the case. your friend's experience sounds like he didn't use the copy of windows supplied with the laptop (they're called OEM editions for a reason!)

that you can install two different versions of windows and linux on a system, having autodetect find all the components, merely means they're using commodity components that are well-supported in the operating system. this was a flaw compaq had in the distant past (see my first message) but which hasn't been an issue in years. hp hardware routinely underperforms its competitors in the desktop arena.

but ... what the fuck do i know? i've only been doing this since 1985 or so.

Every Recovery CD that I've seen shipped with a Compaq system has failed to do any sort of recovery. The laptop I mentioned, after formatting the hard drive, ejected the CD, displayed a Recovery Complete message, restarted and failed to start back up. It even failed to recognize the CD ROM drive, so there was no way to reinstall Windows. An MSDOS start up disk had to be used to even get the thing to boot, and when the Recovery CD was put back in the drive, there was no setup program to run to reinstall the OS. The one exe file on the CD said that it had to be used with the Compaq recovery program, which was wiped out when it formatted the hard drive. Nice OEM edition.

And this was not limited to the laptop...I had two different friends with Compaq desktops that had the exact same thing happen. A recovery CD is no substitute for an actual copy of a Windows setup CD. I will not recommend Compaq products to my friends because of my experience.

But what do I know? I've only been doing this since 1984 or so. Ah, there's nothing like the thought of first 3 1/2" 'floppies' and the soothing green of a CBM cursor blinking at you to bring back the memories. I miss my VIC 20 and my tape drive. I wish I still had them. *sigh*

3.5" floppies? new school! floppies are 8" or they're pointless! i think i remember seeing the actual bits on the media at that size :) of course, you can still buy those tape drives (more or less) at any radio shack ... they haven't changed much, really!

can't speak to your friends experience, but my compaq came with a proper microsoft installation cd (it has compaq's labelling on the media, but i'm reading it on my gateway system now and it's the basic os installation cd (there are *four* "QuickRestore System Recovery CDs" as well, but the important part is the presence of the OS cd).

i've actually been involved with computing since the late 1970's (high school), but i'm only counting professional experience here. tiny c, anyone?

and ... if i were concerned about how the outside of the computer looks i would have never recommended the eMac, which is ... undistinguished. :)

Get Quake 3 (or a similar game) and have fun running around and shooting at other players. And be sure to use the BFG (Big Fucking Gun) a lot, as it really pisses the other players off.

Bah to all the Mac weenies/zealots out there.

If it works for you, then it's fine.
