Here I sit waiting for the freakin' docs to get their buttocks in gear....

At the beginning of July every year we get the new intern docs spanking new right out of med school...

*sigh* You know what they call the last person of the graduating class of med school right? ..Doctor

I am holding their hands so much....one of they asked a very basic question while I was typing this entry. All I have to say if and when I go to med school....I hope I get someone like me who will help me not look like an idiot too much...although with as much knowledge I have, it shouldn't be too difficult. *grin*

Words to know :

SVT = Super-ventricular tachycardia = abnormal fast heart flutter
Cardiovert = "normalize" a cardiac rythum

A little bitty 3 month old just came in with SVT from an adult facility.

We tried to cardiovert with adenosine but the med didn't even touch the heart rate of 300 (normal 100 for that age).

While we were waiting for the second round of adenosine to be drawn up, the attending doctor and I shrugged and tried the old fashion way with a bag full of ice. This is called "the divers reflex". Never saw this before cuz its so old fashion. Basically you get a bag of ice (or bucket depending on the size of the patient) and put it all over the head/face/neck. This causes the body to reflexively to slow heartbeat and breathing to save vital functions.

It totally worked....the kid went from 300 to 100 in about 5 seconds.....woohoo!

Who ever said the new way is the best way never saw this!

My job majorly kicks ass sometimes....

YEAH!!!
