I won't go into the gory details but....

Had a chronic kiddo come in and go to directly to critical care....aka Me and my peeps.

after 3 1/2 hours of getting the kiddo stabilized (away we go!)

- Vtach - almost had to shock the kid....
- 41.9 C (107.4 F) temp!
- intubation (five attempts - ICU fellow had to finally get it)
- blood pressures dropping over and over
- pushing albumin x 3
- putting a fem. central line

*sigh* ICU called....they are (finally!) ready for the kid...

as we are exiting the elevator ("lift" for you poofers *eg*)....the kid drops O2 sats....ECG goes to eradicate rhythms

we are about 200 yards from ICU and 1 floor from the ER...

the kid goes pulseless......*FUCK*

started chest compressions as we ZIP (read : fucking run) down the hall toward ICU

we bust into the quiet ICU hollering at the top of our voices "CODE BLUE"!!!!

about a billion people jump and haul our collective asses to the kid's room (still doing compressions mind you))

ER peeps jump out of the room and ICU peeps fucking start RAWKING......

(ICU peeps do codes like this every night so no biggie to them)

then my RN and myself sit down and do about 3 hours of charting to save our arses if this kid dies and it goes to court.

look up at the clock....*score*....worked about 9 hours without feeling a thing (or eating, drinking, or peeing)

the rest of the might was a breeze after that.

*bows*

ok, I hope to FUCK this never happens again!

PS. the kid is still alive as of now

same as what I said last year.....DITTO

Happy 4th what it means to me.....
WELL CHILDREN:
Parents that call their PCP about a problem and rather than the PCP actually provide medical advice over the telephone, they avoid legal issues and send the parents to the ER. The parents, thinking that this is a "true" emergency, are distraught and then pissed off that (a) that because it is NOT an emergency they will have to wait longer (b) a referral by a PCP doesn't get them seen faster [acuity is set by our staff, not by an outside MD that hasn't physically eval'd the patient] and (c) having insurance or cash/credit/gold/platinum anything does not get them seen faster or a better waiting room [that is called a financial triage and totally illegal according to US federal EMTALA statues]

BROKEN BONES:
Snap, crackle, pop! Inattentive adults allowing children to jump, run, and soar under a blind eye. Social workers are busy today!

LACERATIONS:
Cuts, cuts, cuts! See above reason for broken bones.

BURNS:
Inattentive adults allowing children to grab at grills, stoves, BBQ spits atc....so sad...Mexicans at lake lewisville are famous for this. Social workers are busy today!

NEAR DROWNINGS:
Inattentive adults allowing children to [see a trend here?] wander off or too many kids being watched by too few adults. Mostly the former reason. Mexicans at lake lewisville are famous for this...Social workers are busy today!

MPCs:[motor-pedestrian collision]
Inattentive adults or too many kids being watched by too few adults allow the children to wander off and play in streets. Social workers are busy today!

MVCs:[motor-vehicle collision]
After all is done and partied out, all the dumb drunk people drive back to their homes - with their children in any part of the car they will fit.....unrestrained. Social workers are busy today!
