this morning 2 hours before end of shift we had to intubate a 4yo

not anything out of the ordinary for me.....except

he was the nicest child with perfect manners

repectful even as he was becoming more and more tired from breathing

we explained the procedure to him (putting the tube in his throat)

he handled it so well and with dignity, made everyone misty eyed

as he was going down with the sedation meds he told his parents he loved them...

...not a dry eye in the room

My comment was meant in a light-hearted way, and while I knew it was a bit outré, it didn't seem like a completely vile thing to do given that Clint's story was not only an uplifting one, but also appeared not to be dealing with a tragic circumstance. All the same, I apologize to anyone who found offence in this.

Did I miss something?!

The kid couldn't breath on his own and had to be put on lifesupport (that would be the intubation).. and while slipping under sedation says "I love you" to his family and everyone around them gets weepy over the grace at which this child is facing possible death.

Not exactly the right place to be hinting at oral sex with the EMT who was at intimately involved with this very stressful/trying situation.

Or maybe that's just me?

*boggle*

I didn't understand what the procedure was. I've clearly made myself look like a fool.

I'm going to delete the comment, but definitely not the apology.

I understood. And believe me, we do use laughter and sex jokes to cope.

Thankyou for your thoughts regardless....

You deal with more pain and suffering in a busy day than I see in 6 months. How do you decompress/cope with all of it buddy?

What was the need for the intubation? Is the prognosis hopeful for this tyke?

*HUGS*

Dealing with such extreme emotions on a daily basis must be draining. I admire the personal strength needed for your profession.
