Give him a day to relax, this type of dog is always scared of things in the beggining. Mine took a full day to relax and stop being afraid of me. Once they relax, he will never leave you alone.

If you have a fenced-in back yard (or an off-leash park), just open the door and say "SQUIRREL!" He'll feel much better once you've let him protect you from the invisible but dangerous interloper and praise him for it.
