Last night I was involved in a trauma on a kiddo that had a gunshot wound to teh orehead inflicted by his father. This was posted in Dallas news so I am not breaking any laws.

I was horrified to be apart of this incident.

The worse part was that this boy's appearance looked very simliar to a movie makeup job.

Then I was taken aback that we actually have "real" dead people in the movies these days..

It has taken me 2 days to post this as I have een repressing this visual information.

And I guess I can't cry anymore after the New York/DC attacks...

I don't know if I am dealing with this really really well or really really badly.

I guess we'll find out in the next couple of days.

Clint:

Is there a staff health division that has people on hand? Even if you don't need it, it might be an idea to stop by them and see what they think. No-one can go through seeing stuff like that without being affected, or dissociating. It's horrifying.

Go and debrief, matey. It can't do you any harm. And most importantly, you've got to live to work another day.

If you want me to call, let me know ASAP - I'll call tonight.

Clint:

We give a damn about how you're functioning. The debrief doesn't sound like it's done much for you - if that's the case, take it further. I don't know what options there are in your hospital, but there have to be some. Caring's one of the things that we have to do. If we shut down and "burnout" then we can't do that. Take care of yourself matey. Take it further. I know your employers should have something to help you.

And keep in touch.

Not to be overly-pushy on the mental health front, Clint, but do your benefits include EAP counseling? Sometimes critical stress debriefings fail to address the depth of someone's trauma, but ongoing talks with someone may help. If I can be of any assistance, drop me an email (october31@networkusa.net).

Big hugs...

Listen to those wise gent's. Your line of work requires an amount of strength and fortitude that most dont have in them. There is nothing wrong with seeking help to sort it all out. Sometimes the people that help need help also. You have my respect, in spades.

clint, hang in there and maybe you should consider really talking to someone and not bottling this up.

*hug again*

Just because there was a huge disater in NY doesn't mean that you can't cry over a little boy in TX. One doesn't negate the other.

Cry. Yell. Scream. Work out. Talk it out. Honor your emotions and thoughts.

If the debrief wasn't enough, take advantage of the benefits you have. They are there for a reason. If you want to talk and see my online, say hi. I'll stay and listen.

::hugs::

These things seem to happen all the more frequently and I guess it just seems so impersonal anymore, like its not real.....well this post made me realize these are REAL people...How can shit like this happen...And I don't know how you can deal with things like that. Takes a special person Clint! Hang in there!
